GST registration: the complete document checklist

Every document the department asks for, by entity type — plus the three mismatches that cause most rejections.

Documents by entity type

  • Proprietorship: PAN and Aadhaar of proprietor, photo, bank proof, address proof of place of business.
  • Partnership / LLP: deed or incorporation certificate, PAN of firm, partner KYC, authorisation letter.
  • Company: certificate of incorporation, PAN, MoA/AoA, board resolution, director KYC, DSC of authorised signatory.

Address proof that actually gets accepted

Owned premises: latest property tax receipt or electricity bill. Rented: rent agreement plus the owner's utility bill. Shared or virtual offices: a No Objection Certificate signed by the owner, with the bill attached. The name on the bill and the name on the NOC must match exactly.

The three mismatches that trigger a query

  • Legal name typed differently from the PAN database — even a missing middle name.
  • Utility bill older than two months at the time of filing.
  • Business activity selected in the application not matching the HSN/SAC codes you later invoice under.

Timeline

With Aadhaar authentication, GSTIN is usually issued in 3–7 working days. Without it, expect physical verification and 15–30 days.
